A Grand Goodbye – for now…

Over the last 30 years, the WW&F Annual Picnic has been full of surprises, and 2021 is no exception. In partnership with our friends at Maine Narrow Gauge RR Co. & Museum and Maine Locomotive & Machine Works, we are pleased to present a special, one-day, summertime steamtacular.

Together One Last Time

This will be the last time that all five of the remaining “Maine Two Foot” locomotives will be together on display or under steam for the foreseeable future. Following their shutdown, these historic locomotives will be distributed to four separate locations in Portland and Alna Maine for use, storage, and maybe, just maybe, well… you’ll have to come to the picnic to hear what else is planned!

The Schedule

Each of the operational steam locomotives will rotate duties throughout the day so that something is always “hot” at Sheepscot. Trains will meet each other at Alna Center and include a special runby at Top of Mountain – you’ll get to see and experience the thrill of each of these machines taking on the challenging 3% grade.

A Double-Headed Delight to Trout Brook

And, to top it all off, we’re running a special trip all the down to Mile Post 8 (at Trout Brook Bridge) to let B&SR #7 and WW&F #9 take a one-time-only trip leading a train together up the full Mountain grade. This special train will leave Sheepscot at 6pm.

Train Schedule

There will be a “passenger” (all-coach) and “freight” (mixed) train. Each of the three operating locomotives will depart Sheepscot station pulling one of these two trains at the following times:

  • 10a – WW&F #9: All-Coach Consist
  • 11a – Monson #3: Mixed Consist
  • 12p – B&SR #7: All-Coach Consist
  • 1p – WW&F #9: Mixed Consist
  • 2p – Monson #3: All-Coach Consist
  • 3p – B&SR #7: Mixed Consist
  • 4p – WW&F #9: All-Coach Consist
  • 6p – B&SR #7 & WW&F 9: All-Coach Consist

Passengers will be seated both trains, with the All-Coach consist being historic closed coaches and the Mixed consist being open/excursion cars and a Caboose.

Food and Other Goodies

  • Hamburgers/Hot Dogs, etc. will be on sale.
  • On display: B&SR #8 – the largest surviving locomotive from the Maine two-footers.
  • On display: Monson #4 – a near twin to Monson #3.
  • On display: Parlor Car Rangeley from the SR&RL.
  • More festivities are planned so don’t miss this train!

All Day Pass

Want to pick your trains as the day progresses? Maybe hang out at Top of the Mountain or Alna Center and catch the next train? Consider an All Day Pass – which also includes passage on the 6pm double-header to Mile Post 8!

All-day passes are available to members of the WW&F Railway Museum or Maine Narrow Gauge RR Co & Museum. To buy an all-day pass, click ANY time slot for the train, then select the All Day Pass option.
